Adesh Chaurasia– Media and Communication Industry

As stated by Warren Christopher,

‘Without a free and independent media, true democracy is unattainable.’

These words rightly put forward the significance of an independent media industry in keeping up with the true democratic spirit and ideals of a country.

Then v/s now

The whole scenario of the industry has completely transformed as compared to what it was some years ago. With increasing population, widespread ideas of people, different ideologies, contrasting perspectives, etc. spreading information at a large scale becomes very tedious. What I believe is that politics also has a role to play in the ways the media and communication industry is changing with time.

In a democratic country like India, where the citizens like to give opportunities to many leaders and vote to change them from time to time, the rules and regulations that the government forms for media platforms to act upon keeping on changing too. These are just some of the factors that determine changing working mechanisms in the media industry.

Earlier, these counted to be pretty much the only factors that governed in what ways the media agencies would publish information to a vast number of people. The forms of mass media earlier were-

Television and radio in the category of visual as well as audio media.

Newspapers and magazines in the category of print media.

However, now, the trends have drastically changed with the introduction of social media platforms. Social media, in many countries, including ours, is just as powerful as the regular media industry. With billions of active users consuming and sharing vast amounts of information on a daily basis, any update or news spread as fast as a forest fire.

The platforms are open to a great extent as the censorship protocols here are somewhat lenient in approach. People are mostly liberal to share and consume information according to their own preferences and will. Sometimes the information just captures us unwillingly as we randomly scroll and switch from one window to another.

Times of crisis

There are many points when giving excess freedom and liberty to media-related platforms to circulate information in a raw form can prove to be dangerous as well as harmful for the public to consume.

Many people believe that preparing, editing, and touching up the original content pertaining to the information to be circulated is important to a certain extent in order to act in the best interest of the people as well as maintain harmony within the nation.

In contrast to the opinion presented above, many people also believe that the media is the only platform that can help people know what is happening around the world in its true form. Many people want to see, hear and read the actual reality, free from negotiations and good touches.

All things bright and positive

In my opinion, the media is expected to be circulating what the people really need to know. And what’s needed to be known is the truth. People still put their trust in the media to show them the real picture of the happenings. They want the industry to clear their vision and opinion towards various subjects and act accordingly.

The Indian media industry tries to strike the right balance between giving out authentic information and also, maintaining a respectable image of the political front. This helps the industry ace the idea of mass communication almost every time.

At the end

The media and communication industry has been working remarkably well for years, similar results are expected even in the future. With the right mindset and strong ideals, a wonderful impact can be undoubtedly made in the line of work.
